Who needs the Feds?

Okay, so we do the federal government and the Shrub to get behind environmental initiatives, but it just makes my little heart grin with glee when local governments take action. And some of the steps these cities have come up with are pretty nifty.

From the Washington Post, "Cities Take Lead on the Environment"

Seriously. Think of all the work that could be gotten done if non-govermental organizations stopped sitting around waiting for the government to do something, and just did something about it. Churches have a huge influence. Lots of the poltical happenings that make me cry are the result of churches using their power to do things, I would hesitate to term as good. And, many churches or organizations of church also use their influence to do good. All of that harnessed around responsibility to take care of the environment -- that would make a dent in the problem.

And would fulfill the mandate to "cultivate." See Gen 2:15. Cannot forget that we have a purpose in regard to the rest of the Created Order.

Sadly the church, especially American Protestant Evangelical types, have been all to eager to seperate themselves from environmental issues as if to abandon the Creation we so highly prize when it comes to arguing with Evolution as if it were a Platonian ashtray awaiting the great judgmental blast from God at "the END"...

At the LEAST, we could preach a new sensitivity into "stewardship" and hopefully move into real action in the process too.

Good thought...
